The Chinese New Year celebration at school
I don't want to give away the end, but it was spectacular!
Today (well, I wrote this in the course of a few days so “today” here just means the day it happened), I had a Chinese New Year celebration at school!
We had to go to the basketball court, because that is where all the big events are held, and we sat down on the floor randomly and watched a few performances to start with. There were these people who tossed and bounced this thing that looked like a plastic hourglass turned sideways, on a string attached to chopsticks, which they held in each of their hands. That was cool. Then came the loooong speeches from so many people we didn’t know and we didn’t know what they were talking about, and one by the headmistress. That was BORING.
And then the teacher asked us to take out our caligraphy brushes, me and my BFF Para had no idea what we had to do so we just copied everyone else. We stuck to each other like glue because there were soooooo many people in the court!
And then, the teachers wanted us to paint “gong xi fa cai” in chinese on a red paper. You know what that means, right? It means Happy Chinese New Year, of course!
Para and I messed up badly…. JUST LOOK! Both of our handpainting were HORRIBLE. Para’s was smudged and I accidently gave my characters extra lines!
But then Para had an idea: “maybe we should make the characters look like dragons! Then it would not be SO horrible!” So we did do that! And it looked kinda good!
Then, at break time, the teachers asked us to sit down in the basketball court again. You would NEVER guess what happened!
There was an actual professional dragon dance! Para and I were so amazed by how they danced!
There was even a man throwing gold chocolate coins to the students! He was wearing a big red hat (which we thought was pretty weird-looking) but it suited him, and, hey, he gave out free chocolates, he can wear anything he wants!
(I know he looks like a London guard’s head glued to a cactus’s body holding a basket here but that REALLY was how he looked!)
I hope you enjoyed this story!
Are you celebrating CNY too? How do you celebrate the Chinese New Year at your house?
Are there going to be a dragon dance too?
Tell me, tell me, tell me!
I love "Para's" idea! Glad you enjoyed yourselves on that day, baby ❤️
